EU4Energy shares tips to reduce CO2 emissions

September 08,2020 13:53

EU NEIGHBOURS . The ‘EU4Energy Governance’ project is running a campaign to increase knowledge and understanding of the project’s work and raise awareness about the benefits of energy reforms in the six Eastern partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine).

As part of the campaign, the project uses the hashtag #EnergyReforms4Citizens on social media to share easy tips that people can follow to save energy.

Fuel quality is extremely important for car owners and the environment. This is because poor-quality fuel can damage engines, increase CO2 emissions and increase fuel consumption. The EU, through its Fuel Quality Directive, is regulating fuel quality standards to:

1. Reduce emissions and pollution
Transport is responsible for nearly 30% of the EU’s total CO2 emissions, of which 72% comes from road transport. Air pollution can cause bronchitis and increases the risk of conditions such as cancer.

2. Encourage better engine and emission control technologies

3. Improve the operation of engines
Transposition of the EU directive is currently only recommended for Energy Community contracting parties. Currently, only Georgia is successful in this regard. The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are expected to transpose the directive soon according to the terms set out in their association agreements with the EU.
