Karine Shamiryan is from Shushi. Karine was forced to leave her native city of Shushi with her two daughters during the first days of the war unleashed by Azerbaijan on September 27th. After seeking temporary refuge in different places, the family finally reached Dilijan.
“We did not take anything with us when we left because we believed that we would return. We all thought that we would win, return to our homeland, and continue on with our lives. But the war was terrible and unpredictable, and it had a very painful end,” Karine said.
Karine confessed that she is unable to come to terms with the thought that she lost everything and will never return to Shushi, despite the fact that some time has passed.
The family is currently staying in one of Dilijan’s hotels. They do not know yet where and how they will be able to rebuild their lives.

“I keep waiting to return. We are unable to come to terms with the thought that we lost everything and can’t have it back. I have gotten so lost in my thoughts that I have no hope for the future. I have become pessimistic. It seems like this is a nightmare and I will wake up soon,” Karine said, her tears not letting her finish.
