‘Shushi was heaven, Stepanakert did not even have the investments Shushi did’: Hovhannes Sahakyan

After third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan’s interview, the issue of why investments were made in the 7 regions if negotiations were being held regarding the 5+2 resolution, which, if accepted, would have forced the seven regions to be handed over to Azerbaijan has become a topic of discussion in political circles. The former chair of the National Assembly Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs and member of the Council of the Republican Party, Hovhannes Sahakyan, said that the people who are asking this question wish to remain on the political agenda during a press conference at the Henaran press club.

“That is absurd. During his years in office, third President Serzh Sargsyan often said that he is negotiating around the ‘5+2’ resolution, and he always noted that we must view the issue from the perspective of mutual concessions. What are we talking about when the opposite side of these mutual concessions was Artsakh’s status and the uninterrupted land transport in Karvachar and Lachin. Those roads would have been entirely under the control of our armed forces. An entire generation would not have been decapitated, we would not have had over 5,000 casualties, over 10,000 wounded and disabled, and a decapitated army and state. Our soldiers worked in Fizuli, Jabrayil, Karvachar, Aghdam, and Askeran. Were we not supposed to have any form of communication there? Were we not supposed to carry out construction or provide our soldiers with the minimum living conditions?” Hovhannes Sahakyyan said in agreement with Serzh Sargsyan. “We were negotiating regarding what we would take, and what we would get.”

Regarding Pashinyan’s claim made several months ago that “Shushi was a colorless and hopeless city,” Hovhannes Sahakyan said that anyone who had ever been to that city would never agree with that claim. “Shushi was heaven. Stepanakert did not even have the investments Shushi did. They are making irresponsible statements, believing that no one will ask them questions. Hey, land-giver, what is your basis for saying that ‘Shushi was a colorless and hopeless city?’ These people have crossed all the lines of cynicism and lies. They are speaking about everything. If they’re able to confuse 20 more people, it’s good because they will continue to govern for two more days.”

Hovhannes Sahakyan also spoke about Nikol Pashinyan’s recent visits to the provinces and the statements he made during those visits. According to Sahakyan, those “shows” have one purpose: to show that people still trust Pashinyan. “Power no longer is in his hands. Power lies in the people’s hands or on the streets. Power must be taken so that the country can develop. That is why they took snap elections off the agenda. According to rumors, they intend on making the minimum quota to enter parliament be 4 percent of votes instead of 5, which is due to the fact that they’re afraid that they won’t get 5 percent.”

The Republican Party Council member warned that if the current government remains in power, we will also lose Syunik in its entirety. “I was listening to the head of the Davit Bek village this morning, who said that 20 children were absent from school and 5 families have already moved away from the village because they understand that if Turks are only 50 meters or 1 kilometers away, and the Turks decide to attack at night, no one will defend these people when the Turks come into their homes and decapitate them.” But the current government is not resigning because, according to Hovhannes Sahakyan, they are afraid of criminal prosecution.
