Pure disinformation: U.S. Dismisses Allegations About Talks On ‘Military Document’ With Armenia In Brussels

April 19,2024 19:30

The U.S. Department of State has dismissed allegations in Azeri media about talks over a document related to the military sphere that were purportedly held with Armenia in Brussels.

Earlier this week some media in Azerbaijan have circulated photos of a document they alleged was discussed during the United States-European Union-Armenia trilateral meeting held on April 5. They claimed the document reflected the provision of extensive military support to Armenia.

Responding to a request of Azertac, Azerbaijan’s state-run news agency, to comment on the matter, Washington called that document “pure disinformation.”

“Security issues were not on the agenda. We would direct you to the joint press release we put out along with the EU and Armenia following the April 5 trilateral meeting in Brussels,” the press service of the U.S. Department of State said as quoted by the Azeri news agency on Thursday.

“The Brussels meeting with the EU and Armenia focused solely on Armenia’s economic resilience as it works to diversify its trade partnerships and address humanitarian needs, and support for Armenia’s ongoing reforms, including in areas such as democracy and rule of law,” it added.

Official Yerevan has also discarded publications in the Azeri media as “fake” on Thursday.

Ani Badalyan, a spokesperson for Armenia’s Foreign Ministry, said there was no “hidden agenda” at Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Brussels.

“The meeting held in Brussels was focused on the resilience of Armenia and the diversification of its economy. Too much has been unnecessarily voiced around this topic, and it does not correspond to reality,” she said.

“The complete agenda of the topics discussed in Brussels is set out in the joint press release distributed following the meeting. Any statement made outside the agenda of the press release is false. There was no hidden agenda at the Brussels meeting. The Brussels process has been completely transparent and will remain so,” the Armenian ministry’s spokesperson concluded.
