Anna Danibekyan has nothing to do with it

July 17,2024 10:30

The authorities are trying to pretend that the fact Robert Kocharyan is still at large has a specific “culprit” in the person of Judge Anna Danibekyan. If any outside observer follows the process and is not familiar with the Armenian Criminal Court and the judicial system in general, they may believe that such a thing is possible. But those who have lived in the Third Republic for 33 years know very well that the judge has no role here. The process is purely political.

The authorities are trying to pretend that the fact that Robert Kocharyan is still at large has a specific “culprit” in the person of judge Anna Danibekyan. If any outside observer follows the process and is not familiar with the Armenian Criminal Court and the judicial system in general, he may believe that such a thing is possible. But those who have lived in the Third Republic for 33 years know very well that the judge has no role here. The process is purely political.

I have no doubt that Kocharyan deserves to be punished. And why do the authorities and their mouthpieces only talk about “looting” and “March 1” but do not take any practical steps? There are at least three reasons for this, none of which are related to Anna Danibekyan:

  1. The government acts and is going to act with the same brutality as Kocharyan acted on March 1 and before that.
  2. The current authorities need Kocharyan to be free as a “bobo” in order to constantly scare people with his return, which the vast majority of Armenians, including me, do not want. In 2021, RA citizens were actually faced with the unpromising Pashinyan-Kocharyan election.
  3. Since Kocharyan has “chemistry” with Putin, it is not excluded that there is pressure from the Kremlin in that regard.

The judicial power of Armenia is highly politicized. This is evidenced by the blockade of the courts ordered by the Prime Minister, the labeling of judges as ‘those who squeal under the walls,’ and the vividly expressed political sympathies and even more prominent dislikes of the President of the Supreme Judicial Council.

Why was it necessary to ‘disqualify’ Judge Anna Danibekyan and make her a scapegoat? To give the political process a legal appearance and, to some extent, to appease the ‘blood-hungry’ masses of Pashinyan supporters.
