Statement by RA NA President Alen Simonyan at the General Debate of the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

October 15,2024 17:03

Madam President,

Mr. Secretary General,

Excellencies,

Fellow parliamentarians,

Ladies and gentlemen,

I am honored to address the 149th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and discuss the vital role of science, technology, and innovation in shaping a more peaceful and sustainable future.

For Armenia, a country that faces complex geopolitical challenges, leveraging science and technology is not only about economic growth but also national security, resilience, and sustainability.

Because the applications of Science, Technology and Innovation ( STI ) can also be used in ways that harm people and prevent us from achieving our goals, our choices in how to harness STI to maximize the social, economic, and environmental benefits while managing the downsides and problems become paramount.

One of Armenia’s key priorities is the development of renewable energy. With 270 sunny days a year, our country can make solar power a central part of our energy strategy. We aim to triple our solar energy production by 2030, ensuring that at least 15% of the national energy mix comes from renewable sources. This shift toward clean energy reduces our reliance on fossil fuels and cuts greenhouse gas emissions, fostering sustainable development.

Science and technology are instrumental in helping Armenia manage resources more efficiently and mitigate the risks posed by climate change. Progress in these fields offers solutions to the challenges we face, from enhancing agricultural productivity to improving disaster management. By prudently adopting these technologies, we are not only protecting our environment but also securing a better future for the next generation.

Dear colleagues,

It is essential that we embrace sound technological solutions. Armenia, like many other nations, is focused on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, conserving resources, and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility. This is a collective effort, and we all have a role in ensuring that technological advancements are used wisely to protect our planet.

Science and technology also serve as powerful tools for peacebuilding. From reducing conflicts over natural resources to protecting human rights, scientific innovations can help us meet human needs. Armenia is committed to using technology to this end.

On the subject of peacemaking, I do want to report that Armenia and Azerbaijan are on the cusp of an accord. For context, when the peace process started in earnest many months ago, Azerbaijan wanted our agreement on 5 internationally recognized points. I am pleased to announce that, to date, we have agreed on 16.

Ladies and gentlemen, the perfect must no longer be the enemy of the good.

The time to make peace has come; the time for peace is now.

We invite Azerbaijan to m u ster the political will to seize the moment and join us in making the possible real.

Armenia, for its part, is ready to sign a peace treaty even today.

Thank you.
