On one occasion, Paruyr Hayrikyan, the leader of the Union for National Self-Determination (UNSD), stated that if there were honest political forces on the political stage, he would be ready to cooperate. Therefore, www.aravot.am inquired whether Armenian political forces pursued honest goals. Paruyr Hayrikyan responded, “Everyone is honest, but when it comes to the interest, they turn a blind eye to the truth. There are forces, for which my programs are acceptable.”
We inquired why P. Hayrikyan didn’t cooperate with other forces then to have joint opposition candidates for local elections, for example. Mr. Hayrikyan responded, “Local elections are not national elections. Therefore, I tell members of the UNSD who have serious talks on the local elections to do as they wish. And at the national level, one may achieve any substantial change only through presidential elections these days; therefore, the UNSD hasn’t made any important decision on the local elections.”
As for the actions of the future president, P. Hayrikyan makes the following remarks, “The new president must work under the conditions of a Republican majority in the parliament. He must either have highly moral characteristics or be a criminal element who will change something by terrifying, threatening, using law-enforcement bodies, or will not play any role. I think that I have experience of work based on moral principles, I have traveled a certain road, therefore, I am ready to convince some of the Republicans that my program is logical.”
P. Hayrikyan stated on one occasion that Robert Kocharyan was to blame for the events of March 1 and Serzh Sargsyan was to blame that the Armenian became slave these days. We asked Mr. Hayrikyan to clarify that claim of his. He stated, “I said when there is something in the country and the guilty are not revealed, the government of the time is to blame. For example, the events of March 1 took place when Robert Kocharyan was in power, so Robert Kocharyan is to blame. Perhaps, Ter-Petrossian is actually guiltier, but all that took place when Kocharyan was in power and if it is not solved, the guilty are not punished, mostly the government of the time is to blame. If it was me, I would be guilty.”
