August 23,2020 00:15

“Edgar Shatiryan is a potential candidate, but he is not the government’s candidate,” My Step faction leader Lilit Makunts told reporters in a briefing after a meeting with Edgar Shatiryan.

In response to the question of whether Shatiryan can be an independent and unbiased judge, Makunts said, “We asked Mr. Shatiryan all the questions that we wanted to know as a potential candidate. When we formally present our candidate, we will present our opinion in parliament and during a closed and secret vote.”

As far as how the deputies feel about the candidate, Makunts said, “We have held discussions on several issues, including the fact that he resigned as a member of the Corruption Prevention Commission. Therefore, I cannot say anything about people’s impressions.” Reporters also asked if it is true that the government and My Step had an agreement to nominate Avetisyan as a candidate as they waited for Edgar Shatiryan to turn 40 in order to be eligible, Makunts said, “No, that is not true, nor was there any agreement.”

When asked about how Vahram Avetisyan complained that the My Step faction’s and his positions on the Constitutional Court were different and what happened that caused him to make that post and reject the nomination, Makunts said that she had a different understanding of Avetisyan’s position. “Mr. Avetisyan formed his impression of several deputies due to their tough questions. Tough questions are always asked during all of our meetings. Therefore, the impressions formed due to those questions don’t always correspond to reality.”
