‘If Armenians are not meant to live in the Lachin Corridor, everyone else in Artsakh will be surrounded’: Armen Baghdasaryan

December 03,2020 12:35

“Over the past 25 years, almost everyone and the entire political arena were consistently taking the country towards a war that we had no chance of winning. If we even had a one percent chance of winning, I am convinced that our army would have won,” publicist Armen Baghdasaryan said during the “Failures in the External and Internal Political Arena: Why Did They Happen?” seminar organized by the Media Center.

According to him, the war depended on us, and we consciously went to war. We did not learn any lessons from our failed 25-year policies, and we have still not learned any lessons.

He gave the example that everyone is now saying that this war was randomly lost, there was a lot of betrayal, and more, but in reality, the loss had to do with objective reasons. In exchange for thousands of casualties and our young people, everyone benefited. Armen Baghdasaryan painfully admitted that no one is learning from our mistakes. If the Armenian soldiers and officers- who are the best in the world- lost, then the reason had to do with political mistakes.

Armen Baghdasaryan assured that we have allies to help maintain a viable Armenia in our region: Russia, Iran, and China. “For example, it is in Russia’s best interests for Artsakh to remain Armenian. We need to work on those platforms where we have mutual interests and speak with our enemies.” According to him, there are serious challenges such as prisoners, those missing in action, and border demarcation. Regarding this, he said, “As far as I understood, no one is in charge, and no one is participating. I get the impression that our state does not exist. This is what causes new losses every day. According to the signed agreement, changes were made, but we learn about that from Aliyev. Our government is not saying anything. There are uncertainties surrounding the Lachin Corridor. Those uncertainties are embarrassing because it’s clear that things have changed, but we don’t know about them. There’s a question of whether or not Armenians will live there. If Armenians are not meant to live in the Lachin Corridor, everyone else in Artsakh will be surrounded. The government continues to lie to our people.”

According to Armen Baghdasaryan, it’s clear that Nikol Pashinyan will resign, but we should not discuss the issue of who will succeed him, but instead, we should discuss what steps need to be taken and what political party is able to solve those problems. Baghdasaryan said, “Everyone agrees that this government needs to leave, but a few thousand people have taken to the streets because there are still uncertainties surrounding the next political party and their policies. Meanwhile, we don’t have the time. Our borders are being marked, and we don’t even know if there will be a corridor in Syunik or not, or whether Armenians or Azerbaijanis will be living in Berdzor.”

Armen Baghdasaryan remembered that he believed after November 10th that the government needs to resign, but we need some time in order to maintain stability. Regarding this, he said, “Now, I can see that I was wrong since 20 days passed, but nothing happened during those 20 days. We lost 20 days, and now we will lose 20 more days. We are in a situation where our enemy is taking whatever they can, and they are placing their flag wherever they go. There are different questions that demand daily solutions, but there is no one who can solve them.”
