Two of the classrooms at Dilijan’s Ananyan Secondary School were named after Lieutenant-Colonel Karen Hakobyan and tank driver Private Boris Yesayan, who both died during the second Artsakh War.

In an interview with Aravot Daily, the vice-principal of the school, Lusine Gasparyan, said that Hakobyan and Yesayan graduated from the school, and when they decided to name one of the classrooms after Boris Yesayan, they found out that Lieutenant-Colonel Karen Hakobyan had also died. He had been on the list of soldiers missing in action prior to that.

“My son is also a contract soldier, and Boris was one of his classmates. We were preparing to name one of the classrooms after Boris when we found out that Lieutenant-Colonel Hakobyan, who also graduated from this school, also died after being on the list of soldiers missing in action for 4 months. That is why we decided to name the school’s classrooms after our graduates,” Lusine Gasparyan said.

According to the vice-principal, the lieutenant-colonel, who had two young children, had spent his main service at the military bases in Berd, Dilijan, and Ijevan. He was transferred from Dilijan to the frontlines on October 1st.

Gasparyan said that there were three sons in Boris Yesayan’s family, but the older son died in a car accident several years ago. Boris, who was the youngest son, always emphasized that he would return from the war so that he could rebuild their house. Boris Yesayan was supposed to complete his service on January 1st and return home.

“Boris had many dreams for his future. He was a half-year older than his classmates, and he treated everyone as his younger siblings. According to our sources, Boris died from a UAV strike. The UAV entered the area they were staying in and exploded. The soldiers died from suffocating from the soil that fell on top of them,” the vice-principal said.
