The latestst fruitless verbal fight in the parliament between the opposition deputies and the Prime Minister was again based on the radically different positions of the two sides about the past: “you handed over Karabakh” – “no, you handed it over.” According to the opposition, the current government has caused human and territorial losses due to its actions over the past 3 years.
From Pashinyan’s point of view, in April 2018, a situation was created that it was simply impossible not to have those losses. I suggest that the reader assess the seriousness of these two arguments, but I will just note that in the first case, the current situation is assessed, and in the second, the theatrical, possible developments are. Fans of alternative history may be training on the topic: “If the RPA remained in power, would Aliyev have attacked Artsakh in September 2020 and would we have suffered such a heavy defeat?” For example, I can not answer that question because it is like reading a cup of coffee.
But for me now, the most important thing is not the degree of innocence or guilt of the parties. The answers to the following three questions are much more important: 1) Can Armenia now sign a document that will provide a road to Azerbaijan and Turkey without losing control of our country over that road and getting a similar road through the territory of Azerbaijan? Or can it avoid signing an unfavorable document? 2) Can Armenia achieve demarcation and delimitation by bypassing the issue of Artsakh’s status? As a result of this process, will we have a stable and secure situation on our borders? 3) Can the parliamentary opposition with its actions hinder the unfavorable solution of these two issues?
Unfortunately, I can not give an “optimistic” answer to these three questions. And the reason is not only the qualities of our government or opposition. On the other hand, it is not only the current unfavorable geopolitical situation. The main reason, in my opinion, is the apathy and indifference of our society, and how the majority of our citizens do not care about the aforementioned issues. Some (the majority) dream of punishing the “former,” others (the minority) dream of getting rid of Pashinyan. But they do not ask themselves what needs to be done to resist foreign aggression and, ultimately, to have a state. And why our society is like that, oh, the 4 Armenian leaders since 1991 can be blamed for that. They overlooked this crucial issue.
