“Russia needs a partner, not a vassal”: Opposition member

March 21,2022 15:03

RPA member and former Deputy Minister of Defense Artak Zakaryan, in a briefing with the media, analyzing the changes taking place in the world and the reaction of the Armenian authorities to them, said, “To be in a war, to be in the status quo, to be rejected by both Russia and the West, to be deprived of opportunities for economic development, to be in the last car in matters of food security. In other words, they will give us whatever is left. If there’s nothing left, they won’t give us anything. Or we will appear on the list of third or fourth world countries on the UN World Food Program.

That is, give them something to eat so they don’t die until we see what happens. They lead us that way. No, we can stay out of communications. And the most important and biggest risk is the issue of Artsakh’s and Armenia’s security, all our military-political balances that we have achieved in international cooperation. In particular, the Armenian-Russian military-political and military-technical cooperation, the active bilateral relations with the United States and France, and the important role we have in the region do not exist today. In other words, Armenia has not solved its security problem at the moment. We do not even have a changed concept of national security, and no one thinks about it. They change the issue of whether to put salt on the tables or not, but no one bothers to address the security concept of the state and three million people,” said Artak Zakaryan.

To the last question of if we should simply obey Russia, he answered. “The rail of the Armenian-Russian cooperation must be a guide for us, a combination of all the other rails. We need to understand something very clearly. Russia needs a partner, not a vassal. Having a partner means that at some stage you are useful to it, at some stage it is useful to you. And here sometimes they think that we should do nothing, let the Americans come and help us, or the Russians come and take care of us. That does not happen. And our history has shown that a hundred times.”
