For 20 years, since 2004, October 16 has been celebrated as the Armenian Press Day, in memory of the publication of the first Armenian periodical, Azdarar, in Madras on October 16, 1794.
Today, the Armenian press and Armenia based press are facing many challenges due to both objective and subjective factors. The employees of the Armenian press perform their daily duty in the conditions of daily increasing information flows, including disinformation, on the one hand, and on the other hand, free speech, under the pressure of the authorities against the press.
As a result of these and many other factors, a situation has been created where, apparently, in nominal terms, there are the necessary conditions for freedom of speech and press, on the other hand, in terms of content, journalists have to face a number of obstacles. And despite all the difficulties, representatives of the Armenian press perform their work, which is objectively not free from flaws, it is affected by all the vicious phenomena of public and state life in which Armenia lives today.
