The Artsakh Union welcomes the inclusion of critical provisions regarding the rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) in the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on April 30. These provisions address the right of return, the protection of cultural heritage, the implementation of accountability measures and the release of hostages (Articles 12 and 13).

The Union highlights the following specific clauses:

“Reiterates its support for the rights of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians, including the protection of their identity, property and cultural heritage, and their right to a safe, unimpeded and dignified return under appropriate international guarantees;”

“calls for those responsible for the destruction of Armenian cultural and religious heritage to be held accountable, and for an international assessment mission;”

“Condemns Azerbaijan’s unjust detention of Armenian prisoners of war, detainees and hostages; demands their immediate and unconditional release;”

“notes the steps taken so far and calls for further confidence-building measures; calls for full respect for international humanitarian and human rights law;”

The Artsakh Union highly appreciates the consistent and principled stance of the Members of the European Parliament and its political groups regarding the protection of the rights of the people of Artsakh. This commitment, reflected in resolutions adopted over recent years, remains steadfast even as various governments have undergone sharp shifts in their positions.

These European Parliament resolutions serve as clear benchmarks for the executive branches of the European Union and its member states. Currently, these executive bodies frequently ignore the rights of the people of Artsakh due to narrow interpretations of their own geopolitical interests.

“This resolution is an important signal to our people that we are not entirely forgotten by the international community and that we have values-based friends who continue to support our collective and individual rights. We hope that during the 8th Summit of the European Political Community and the 1st EU-Armenia Summit to be held in Yerevan on May 4-5, the leaders of the European Union and member states will take this latest European Parliament resolution into account and undertake derived actions and statements,” said Artak Beglaryan, President of the Artsakh Union.

The Union emphasizes that sustainable peace and democratic development in the region are impossible until the rights of the people of Artsakh are restored and protected and the anti-Armenian hatred state policy in Azerbaijan is eradicated.
