Today www.aravot.am inquired of governor of Syunik Suren Khachatryan what was the reason for the tensions in Sisian and why the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) hadn’t announced any candidate in Sisian. He assured that there were no tensions. In response to our observation that the tensions had arisen, because the RPA had decided to endorse the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) candidate, former mayor Aghasi Hakobjanyan, Suren Khachatryan said, “The RPA does not endorse anyone, no one interferes with anyone. There are free elections over here; the one who is stronger will win.”
As for the news that Hovik Abrahamyan had met with him regarding that issue and he had asked that there was no RPA candidate in Sisian, in order that the PAP candidate could win, Suren Khachatryan assured that he hadn’t talked with Hovik Abrahamyan on that issue, they hadn’t met, “There is no such thing, there is free competition over here, the Republican Party will vote for the one it wishes, I don’t see any problem.”
In response to our question whether the RPA didn’t have a suitable candidate in Sisian, the governor said, “It had, perhaps, they didn’t wish to announce their candidacies.”
According to Suren Khahcatryan’s assessment, generally, the situation in the run-up to the local elections is normal, there have been no problems and there are no tensions.
