September 02,2016 18:15

Yerevan (ICRC) – Today, a three-day War Surgery Seminar commenced in Yerevan, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Armenia in cooperation with the Ministries of Health and Defense of Armenia. The course is held from 2-4 September at the Olympia Hotel (64 Barbusse Street, Yerevan).

Around 85 surgeons from civilian and military hospitals of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh take part in the event. Through presentations and discussions, among other topics, they will learn more about surgical management of various types of war wounds, dealing with war surgery anesthetics, handling and control of infection, and managing mass influx of patients during emergencies.

Two ICRC surgeons, Dr. Martin Herrmann (Germany) and Dr. Marco Pinna Pintor (Italy) facilitate the seminar. Both of them have many years of experience treating war-wounded patients at the ICRC-run hospitals around the world and delivering seminars for local doctors.

“For more than twenty years we have been running courses on war surgery in numerous places affected by conflicts”, says Caroline Douilliez, Head of ICRC Delegation in Armenia. “Through learning and sharing of experiences, we aim at building capacity of medical personnel to treat properly any patients with injuries. It is also an opportunity for us to enhance our own knowledge and practices by engaging with specialists from civilian and military health structures”.

In Armenia, this course is organized for the first time. Upon completion, the participants will receive certificates as well as CPD (continuous professional development) credits assigned by the Ministry of Health of Armenia.
