Arayik Harutyunyan: ‘The goal of winning at least 25 Olympic gold medals by 2050 is realistic’

February 21,2020 22:10

During the Top 10 Athletes of 2019 awards ceremony at the Presidential Residence, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that the government is establishing its strategies till the year 2050 and it has dedicated a special portion of its strategies to sports. The Prime Minister also noted that, after taking into consideration our national and state goals, there is a project in place to win at least 25 Olympic gold medals by 2050.

After the awards ceremony, Aravot Daily asked Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport Arayik Harutyunyan during a briefing if he finds this goal to be realistic. “If we take into consideration the fact that there have already been works in place for us to win one gold medal, then we have 24 remaining. But in reality, we do need to work very hard in that direction. I mentioned in my speech that we need to first appreciate the efforts our athletes and their coaches made to develop sport and to win. Of course, we also need to develop infrastructure.”

Journalists also were interested in Arsen Julfalakyan’s Facebook status where he claimed that illegal activities are taking place against him and that everything is being done to ensure that he will not be able to participate in the Tokyo Olympics. The minister was asked if he is aware of what is taking place and why the athlete is appealing to the public. “I am aware and I believe that the federation and the team need to find a solution. Decisions need to be made and those decisions need to be fair,” the minister said.

In response to Aravot Daily’s question of whether he believes that the athletic committee’s decision was fair or not, the minister said, “Coaches tend to make decisions themselves and then accept responsibility for the results.”
