‘There is no tension in Syunik, supposedly there is already a concrete agreement about Syunik’: Expert

“It is a fact that Azerbaijan is trying to sign a specific document and especially put more pressure on the Armenian side to get more favorable positions in specific areas. The small conditional battles in Verin Shorzha and the tense situation are evidence of that,” Garnik Davtyan, an expert on Azerbaijan, told Aravot Daily in reference to the military encroachments on the territory of Armenia by Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Defense announced that “before the negotiations planned in Moscow, the enemy has launched an offensive military operation on the Armenian borders, from Sotk to Verin Shorzha.”

According to Garnik Davtyan, if before there was a tense situation in Syunik, now, in a strange way, there is relative calm in the area. “The question arises of why don’t we have tension in Syunik, but instead in Verin Shorzha. One can assume that there is already a concrete agreement on Syunik in terms of territories and demarcation- I mean some tripartite agreement. As for Verin Shorzha, perhaps something did not go well, or, in all probability, Azerbaijan tried to get a more favorable position before the negotiations in Moscow. Therefore, all this is interconnected in this way,” Davtyan expressed.

As for the statement of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry today that “we call on Armenia to accept the new realities in the region, to put an end to military provocations, and to start negotiations on the demarcation of the state border,” Davtyan said. “As always, the Baku Foreign Ministry stands out with its cynical behavior. What are they talking about when they invaded 3.5 km of Armenian sovereign territory in Syunik, when we also had a violation of Armenian sovereignty in Verin Shorzha?

There is also tension in the Yeraskh section. Speaking of territorial integrity, Azerbaijan probably confuses the territorial mapping between itself and Armenia. Naturally, Azerbaijan will try to blame the provocations on Armenia in order to present the latter as a destructive party and a failure of the negotiations so that it can, for example, demand more from Armenia as a result of pressure from Russia. In other words, to show that Armenia is a non-contracting party, and that the only way to talk to Armenia, as a result of which it is possible to have a clear agreement, is to extort concessions through pressure and get more favorable positions.” By the way, it should be noted that a few days ago, the Azerbaijani propaganda machine hinted about a document to be signed. At that time, Davtyan did not rule out that the issue of demarcation would also become a subject of discussion with the dangers arising from it.
