Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) member, “Did Prescott sell us?”

January 17,2012 16:06

During a meeting with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) faction, PACE co-rapporteur on Armenia John Prescott, according to MP Lilit Galstyan, admitted that 100% proportional representation was not acceptable for himself either, because it had caused controversies also in Great Britain at the time and for example, his own party, the Republican Party had lost the election after switching to 100% proportional representation at the parliament and had lost the power.

Aravot.am inquired from RPA member Hamlet Harutyunyan whether he had concerns that switching to 100% proportional representation might damage the RPA members and they would lose the authority during the election, as it had happened in Great Britain, “No, the Republican Party cannot have such concerns. Prescott says the right thing that he is against the proportional representation, but we do not understand foreigners correctly. The man thinks that this electoral system is the right system for Armenia. Do you know how it is in our country, when the opposition agrees with Prescott on something, they say he is a good man, when that poor man says some objective thing, they think Prescott sold them.”
