The Task Is to Prevent Violations

May 05,2012 12:19

Considering features of our reality, it is not so meaningful to declare a day of silence before the election. Firstly, I cannot imagine how it is possible to keep silent on social networks and whether anyone can supervise and block writing statuses and comments, let’s say, on Facebook. Secondly, the borderline between propaganda and “non-propaganda” is rather relative. Some people, for example, give interviews and state that they will not be engaged in the election campaign, but in reality, they do it quite much, having absolutely exact target. It is not necessary for propaganda to urge to vote for this or that one, one can just say, for example, that he doesn’t like this or that person’s appearance. No one will do any researches on every word or every sentence here.

On the other hand, I am happy that there will not be at least open, unconcealed propaganda in squares, newspapers and “officially allowed” broadcasting, because people are tired of the barrage of words – those who want to carry out their civil duty on Sunday will have to clearly be alone with their thoughts and if they are not on the internet, they will be free of that barrage of words. That is what international term “the day of silence” means.

And the ultimate task, certainly, is revelation of possible fraud and if it is possible, its prevention. Aravot will also try to make its modest contribution to this issue. A subsite (certainly, if we are able to solve a few technical problems) will operate on www.aravot.am from today and within the next few days, the link will be put on the main page of our main website. All complaints about violations received both by Aravot reporters and other sources will be put on it. Naturally, the same thing will be done by dozens, if not, hundreds of other websites. We will try to differ from the others by the fact that we will try to get an answer from the police, the Central Electoral Commission (ECC) and other competent bodies about every complaint. Every unanswered alert will be perceived as confirmation of it. Certainly, I understand that there will be some complaints, the response to which will require certain legal actions – in that case, one should say what kind of actions. You will know about this initiative of ours in detail on our website www.aravot.am today.

One of the problems of our life these days is unanswered accusations.
