‘We had two cases of people waiting at home this morning, whereas there were 20 yesterday, so the situation today is better’: Arsen Torosyan

July 03,2020 20:30

The Minister of Health, Arsen Torosyan, when asked by reporters about whether or not the fight against the coronavirus is providing the desired results due to the fact that hundreds of new cases are being confirmed daily, responded, “If we are to focus on the word “desired,” then we can talk about it. Everyone in Armenia who has the coronavirus is receiving the appropriate treatment, which did not take place in countries that are more advanced in Armenia. Therefore, the efforts of the government are working and they will continue. As far as the numbers go, which are not decreasing unfortunately, they are being registered as a result of people attending events. So, not only does it depend on our efforts, but also on everyone’s behavior.”

Then, the minister eased people’s fears. “We are not in a very dangerous situation. According to all predictions, we should have had more than 30,000 cases, but we have 27,000 at the moment. So, we have been able to stall the spread of the virus somewhat. It seems that we are on a straight path from June 1st.”

When asked about how people complain about the fact that they are not being taken to the hospital as they are waiting for their test results and whether or not this is truly a good policy to have, the minister said, “The healthcare system needs to provide for patients. As we are able to increase our capabilities slowly, we are able to help more people. We need to remember that we are currently in a pandemic, which puts an even larger burden on the healthcare system. For example, we had two cases of people waiting at home this morning, whereas there were 20 people yesterday. Therefore, the situation today is better than yesterday. The situation changes every day. We are trying to come up with specific solutions for specific cases.”

The minister also said that specific hospitals are starting to treat patients that have not had confirmed test results yet. For example, people who have difficulty breathing but whose test results have not come in yet are being treated at the National Burn Center and the Nork Infection Hospital.”
