The lessons from Tavush

July 16,2020 18:51

To blame the former, current, or future authorities for the fact that Azerbaijan attacked Armenia or Artsakh is simply propaganda. Azerbaijan attacked and it will continue to attack for the foreseeable future regardless of the people in charge of the Armenian state, the military or political situation in the region, and even regardless of what other countries and international organizations have to say. The current leader of Azerbaijan has explicitly stated why this is taking place: the goal of Azerbaijan and Turkey is to eradicate the Armenian state. Finally, about pacifism, negotiations, and calls for peace. I am not a pacifist; if our neighbor is armed and is attacking the borders of your country, you are obligated to destroy their forces. The more you destroy and the more damage you inflict upon their artillery and infrastructure, the more their leader is going to wonder whether or not they should repeat this attempt. Our army’s activities with regard to this were adequate. However, the Armenian authorities must continue to find ways to make peace and to use any diplomatic opportunities to return to the ceasefire regime. I do not see anything wrong with making calls for peace. I understand that we must respond to aggression and I am sorry that we had casualties, but I am also not rejoicing about the fact that we were forced to take the lives of our opponents (regardless of what anyone says about how that joy is appropriate and “nationalistic”). It would have been good if the leaders of our neighboring country were wiser and if they did not send people to their deaths.
