EU NEIGHBOURS. The entry into force of the Comprehensive and Advanced Partnership Agreement is an important and positive milestone for EU-Armenia relations, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said in a call on 2 March with Armenian Foreign Minister Ara Aivazian.

Their discussion focused on the entry into force of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) on 1 March 2021, as well as the recent developments in Armenia.

Borrel said the agreement underscored the shared commitment to democracy and the promotion of human rights, and provided the framework of cooperation in a wide range of areas, including creating jobs and business opportunities, protecting the environment, and furthering education and research opportunities. The High Representative also highlighted the EU’s sustained support to Armenia’s reform path, which is essential for the modernisation of the country.

Referring to recent developments, Josep Borrell noted the significant challenges that Armenia faces at the moment. He stressed that all actors must resolve their political differences peacefully and through dialogue, as well as in strict adherence with the principles and processes of parliamentary democracy.

Ara Aivazian and Josep Borrell also discussed regional security issues.
