“Democracy” in Yerablur

September 22,2022 10:33

This year, it would not be appropriate to have a fancy or even festive concert on September 21st. Especially in the last two years, we have absolutely nothing to brag about or celebrate. In that sense, the government did the right thing by not organizing any event. It could have been limited to the Prime Minister’s message. It’s true, if I were to write that text, I would definitely mention Artsakh in some way, which, let me remind you, just two years ago “it was Armenia and that’s it.” But today, as I mentioned in the previous column, it is not among the priorities of the Armenian authorities.

Going to Yerablur is not among the mandatory activities of Independence Day. Why did the Prime Minister decide to go anyway, knowing that he could meet mothers with children there? It seems to me that the psychological explanation is quite simple: the problem is a boy’s desire for self-affirmation, to prove that he has power, can rule, crush, and cause pain. This, I think, explains the brutal violence of the red berets against parents with children. Although, even in case of Pashinyan’s departure, violence could be avoided if there was a desire. But then the show of force would not be perfect.

The arguments of the supporters of the government to justify the brutal actions of the police are interesting. Let me remind you that these propagandists present themselves as supporters of Western values, democracy, freedom of speech and assembly. And here, according to them, the parents of the children had to be beaten because they were “Kocharyans.” First, the claim is dubious. If the prime minister actually said that he did not avoid the war because he did not want to hear accusations of treason against him, and on another occasion he repeated the same idea, saying that if we had not gone to war, we would have had the same result, but without casualties, then I think that it is a sufficient basis for the parents’ respective feelings towards him. But let’s assume that all the protesters gathered in Yerablur were supporters of Kocharyan. Does that justify brutally attacking people?
