People are interested in that

February 11,2023 12:02

Remember in the movie “The Toy,” when the editor of the newspaper reports to the owner about what will be posted in the next edition of the newspaper, the owner Rambal-Koche asks, puzzled, “do you think those meatballs are interesting to the reader?” I often ask myself that question as an owner and editor. Is the debate between Hayk Konjoryan and Hayk Mamijanyan interesting to Armenian society? (Consider the names are conditional; I have nothing against those young people. I’m just giving the most recent example.)

Judging by the reactions on the Internet, people are interested in this dispute because under every such speech, dozens of fans and “haters” express their feelings violently: “Hey, bravo, you did kick well” or vice versa: “Who are you to say such things?” Neither the thoughts expressed by the MPs nor, even more so, such reactions have a separate content meaning; it is somewhat similar to the question-and-answer game of the “Club of the happy and resourceful” The difference is that the parties allow more rude and offensive expressions towards each other and that hundreds of “inventive” people appear on social platforms, who have the opportunity to show all their intelligence and vocabulary.

Although these repeated (and, in my opinion, very dull), debates have no direct connection with the fate of our state and people; their immediate political content is straightforward. The opposition, seeing that Pashinyan came to power in 2018 by speaking “from the heart of the people,” thinks that it can succeed in the same way, and now it is its turn to engage in populism and demagoguery. But the problem is that the opposition parties cannot compete with Pashinyan and even the second-echelon CC figures in that field.

Fortunately, their only competitor is across the ocean and does not have “talented” followers like him in Armenia. When the parliamentary opposition says, “Let’s hold early elections once more,” they are probably joking. If they are serious, they do not understand that they will lose to the government again.

The problem, therefore, is not who will be able to deceive the citizens with more skillful language, but that these citizens are ready to be deceived.
