“Azerbaijan, in its alliance with Russia, has encircled Artsakh and is holding the local population hostage to gain more political pressure on Armenia”

June 10,2023 11:15

JOINT LETTER FROM ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING SUPPORT TO REFUGEES AND DISPLACED PEOPLE FROM ARTSAKH

To Her Excellency Ms. Andrea Wiktorin,
the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia

To His Excellency Mr. Niels Scott,
the UN Resident Coordinator ad interim in Armenia

To Her Excellency Ms. Anne Louyot,
the Ambassador of French Republic to Armenia

To Her Excellency Ms. Kristina Kvien,
the Ambassador of the United States to Armenia

The undersigned non-governmental organizations, representing the people replaced by the 2020 war against the people of Artsakh, write to you to raise serious concerns about the situation around the Berdzor (Lachin) Corridor and the disruption of its status. The Corridor is the only vital route for the people of Artsakh. The disruption of its status will lead to the genocide of the people of Artsakh by Azerbaijan through genocidal policy, as it happened in 1988 –1993 in Sumgait, Kirovabad, Baku, Maragha and other settlements.

The racist government of Azerbaijan disrupted the status of the Corridor first by placing state-sponsored “environmentalists” there, then by replacing them with regular soldiers and building illegal checkpoint. It is obvious that these actions solely aim to terrorize the people of Artsakh and force them to leave the region or forcefully obey the rule of Azerbaijan. By taking these steps, Baku is legitimizing its use of force.

It is extremely unacceptable that the UN is not condemning the government of Azerbaijan which is notorious for its continuous violations of universal human rights and the values enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We wish to remind you that Azerbaijan is at the bottom of any rating regarding human rights, political and media freedoms.

Azerbaijan, in its alliance with Russia, has encircled Artsakh and is holding the local population hostage to gain more political pressure on Armenia, which is far ahead of other countries in the region regarding human rights and democratic values.

We write to request that you raise the concerns outlined in this letter with the governments of the EU member states, with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, with the governments of France and the of the US and strongly urge you to implement all the possible measures to reopen and secure the Berdzor (Lachin) Corridor which connects Artsakh to Armenia and the outer world. We also urge you to undertake measures to secure Armenia’s right to legally arm itself to protect its people, by exerting pressure on Russia, which is pursuing an aggressive and devastating policy towards Armenia for the past 32 years.

We look forward to your response on this critical issue.

Sincerely,
