Massive Deforestation in Goris

August 23,2012 16:55

Grigor Tatevatsi Square in Goris has unbelievably changed. None of the trees in the square has been preserved, around 20 trees and bushes have been cut at a time and the square has become absolutely naked. Witnesses tell that last afternoon the trees decorating the square were barbarically cut and the green zone was destroyed. “Goris doesn’t stand out for its green zone, as it is; they have not planted any trees instead of the trees that have been cut for many years, they have massively cut those beautiful pine trees and bushes,” residents of Goris who think that this step of the town hall is unacceptable say.

And Nelson Voskanyan, the mayor of Goris, communicated that the deforestation aimed at beautifying the square and all 17 trees were overmature and were not useful and denied the information that there was a red-listed tree among the trees cut, adding that there was no red-listed tree, whatsoever, in the Goris boulevard. “Ma’am, this is not massive deforestation, 17 trees, which were surely not useful, have been cut, 30 new trees – silver and evergreen pine trees – will be planted in the autumn instead of them. The deforestation was for beautifying the square, the project of which has been there for a long time and at last, we have found money. New sidewalks will be built in the square, 30 new trees will be planted in the autumn instead of the trees cut etc. for 20 million AMD taken from the budget and given by benefactors; they are intended to be finished within two months,” the mayor of Goris stated.
