Not That It Was the Battle of Avarayr, the President of the Rock Association Says About the Eurovision (Video)

May 17,2013 10:53

www.aravot.am inquired of Vardan Grigoryan, the president of the Armenian Rock Association, what impression the Eurovision songs and performances had made on him and how he had liked the performance of Dorians, the band representing Armenia. “I have never liked sports in music – competition, first, second etc. As for the Eurovision, at any rate, there is something nice in it, although dismal music is usually played at the Eurovision. I am happy that Dorians have gone to the Eurovision this year, and guys from our area, rock music, are participating. I have known Gor for a long time; he is a very good guy and a good singer. His performance was nice, there was modesty; it was more interesting than the musicians of the other years. I don’t want to say other good things like ‘Oh, it was wonderful,’ because live concerts of Dorians are really good. I think that there could have been a better song. Gor sang well; the backup singers were not so good.

“Not that we were participating in the Battle of Avarayr; the Eurovision is just a show, and the important thing is that the group becomes known a little, presents itself to the world, and opportunities are opened up to it,” Vardan Grigoryan noted. In response to our question whether it was an accident that all three countries of the South Caucasus had gone through to the final, the president of the Armenian Rock Association said: “Frankly speaking, I am not that competent in external political issues, although it seems to me that there is always something else to all this, besides music. However, I cannot say what principles are in effect.”

Whose performance has impressed you, as a musician, besides that of Gor Sujyan? “I got interested in the Bulgarian girl; she was beyond the standard, there was something interesting. The Azeri number was in accordance with the principles of the Russian show business, when they invest a lot of money in it, but there is actually nothing. In that sense, our performance was at least modest.”

Let us remind that Gor Sujyan, the lead singer of Dorians, sang the song “Lonely Planet.” Besides Armenia, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, Norway, Iceland, Finland, Malta, and Greece have also gone through to the final of the Eurovision 2013 Song Contest.
