If you are a middle-aged and above Armenian man, then it is very likely that you would have such memories. When you were having a date with a girlfriend in the years of adolescence and early youth, your mother was “finding fault” with her. And later, when you were not having a date with this girlfriend and had a new girlfriend, your mother was saying that the previous one was better than this one. Until “this one” was becoming “previous” and was again obtaining undisputed positive features in your mother’s eyes. And so on and so forth. The problem certainly was that at the subconscious level, the “average statistic” Armenian mother does not want her son to have a date with someone, as well as to marry for she is sure that her son belongs only to her. But she would not confess this subconscious assurance even to herself, therefore, at the rationale level, she need “explanations”, including the “nostalgic memories” about the previous one, “Well, I am not against at all, I am against this particular girl while I even loved the previous one.”
Approximately the same psychological mechanism functions in the relationship of Armenian citizens-Armenian government authorities. The majority of citizens is reluctant to have any local authorities but it does not realize it and formulates its subconscious sense in the rational sphere in a way that it is against the current authorities. I do not know what people were talking about Anton Kochinyan (I was small at that time) but starting with Karen Demirchyan, they were talking about all Armenia’s authorities what is said about the current rulers: looters, thieves, robbers, etc. But it was said during the tenure of given “king” and when this term was over, some time later, it “turned out” that “people liked him very much.” People honestly were forgetting that they “did not like his” and this “forgetfulness” helps them to “rationalize” their subconscious aspirations.
Now, about the Ombudsman. As long as Karen Andreasyan (also his predecessors) was running his office, he, as the opposition believes, was the government’s minion that does not dare to “stand next to the people”, and the opposition lawmakers were demanding him to resign. As soon as he was removed from his office (let’s call things by their proper name), he became the head of merely the only normal operating structure and generally, a “ray of light in the dark kingdom”. In other words, it appeared that “people liked him too.”
Now, I will do my forecast. Whoever is appointed to the position of Human Rights Defender, in the beginning, they will say, Well, it is clear, he is the government’s servant. But since actually we have a public opinion that affects the one who occupies this position, the 4th Ombudsman, sooner or later, will display some self-dependence. And the government will say again, “Hey, bro, how it happens that we appoint you and you do not do what we say?” and will again force a resignation. After that, it will turn out that “people liked him.”
