March 30,2020 11:20

It is with profound sadness that we mark the loss of Mr. Patrick Devedjian, a noble French statesman and a champion of all Armenians, who passed away over the weekend.

Leading with grace and dignity, Mr. Devedjian was the consummate civil servant. From lawyer to minister, parliamentarian to president, and most recently as president of the Paris Haut-de-Seine District, he was recognized for his prominent career as an attorney who ceaselessly advocated for human rights. His strong convictions have left a deep imprint on the laws for which he fought and the lives he touched throughout his public life.

Among his many impassioned causes, he ensured that the voice of French-Armenians was heard. His relentless pursuit of justice to achieve recognition of the Armenian Genocide led to the passage of groundbreaking legislation in France.

AGBU was honored to work with Mr. Devedjian over the years and we extend our sincere condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren and the entire Armenian community in France. He leaves behind an inspiring legacy of standing up for truth and justice against all odds. Thank you Mr. Devedjian for all you have done for your people.

During the 90th General Assembly held in Paris in February 2019, the AGBU Central Board of Directors awarded Mr. Devedjian with the Boghos Nubar Prize, the highest distinction conferred by AGBU to community members who work tirelessly in service of society.

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) is the world’s largest non-profit organization devoted to upholding the Armenian heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian programs. Each year, AGBU is committed to making a difference in the lives of 500,000 people across Armenia, Artsakh and the Armenian diaspora.  Since 1906, AGBU has remained true to one overarching goal: to create a foundation for the prosperity of all Armenians.
