‘They captured Shushi; we did not concede it’: Lena Nazaryan presents offer made on October 19th that Pashinyan rejected

November 19,2020 20:13

During a briefing in parliament, the Vice Speaker of the National Assembly, Lena Nazaryan, said that the draft for martial law was passed in accordance with a suggestion made by the government. Now, parliament has not been given any signal that would indicate that the country should come out of martial law. Therefore, they are against this suggestion made by opposition parties. “We will not be participating in that session. We are against it.”

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, said that he presented a better suggestion on October 19-20, which Nikol Pashinyan had rejected. When asked about this, Lena Nazaryan responded, “We learned that between October 19-20th, a suggestion was made by the Russian president to which Aliyev had also agreed. According to this suggestion, we would need to allow refugees to return to Shushi, and the majority of them were Azerbaijanis. I want to remind you that Shushi was a part of the NKAO. When the Armenian side saw that the situation on the frontlines was tense, it effectively agreed to the concession of the 7 regions, but Aliyev also included Shushi. That is what happened. The Armenian side, when discussing the issue, believed that it was unacceptable to concede Shushi. That effectively meant the concession of Shushi due to the fact that, if refugees returned, 80 percent of them are Azerbaijanis. That would mean conceding Shushi. So, he decided to continue the fight, which he informed the Russian president about. We believed that we would have a military success because we know that Shushi is a fortress city. The military-political leadership believed that we would be successful. That did not happen, and it was only possible to accept that offer when half of Shushi fell because it became clear that it would not be possible to win. None of the other soldiers would have been able to carry out their duties. That is why we signed the agreement. Now, if Armenia and Artsakh agreed to let Azerbaijani refugees return on October 19-20th, society would have blamed us for conceding Shushi. They are still blaming us, but Azerbaijan captured Shushi; we did not concede it.”

Lena Nazaryan said that Nikol Pashinyan is the tool for stability and his resignation or replacement with another majority-favored candidate is unacceptable. “As paradoxical as it may sound, Nikol Pashinyan will provide more stability than instability in this situation.”

When asked if Pashinyan didn’t have a full grasp on the situation, or if he was serving the interests of Western forces, My Step deputy Arman Yeghoyan said that the three ceasefires brokered by three world powers were all violated. Armenia stopped firing in all three cases. So, what Western interests were they serving? Two of the ceasefires were brokered by Western nations.
