Messages without emotional colors

June 10,2021 11:00

I will set aside the “artistic part” of the acting Prime Minister’s speeches. Everyone speaks within the framework of their upbringing, their cultural ideas. The audience of Pashinyan’s speeches is “the people,” that is, the people who think that the Pope came to Armenia after the last war and offered to return our prisoners of war, and the “former regime” stopped him, or the people who say that there were no casualties during the war.  Those “people” see someone like them in Pashinyan with the same vocabulary and intellect. And like any other politician, he must mobilize his electorate during the elections and make them feel as passionate as possible.

But all of this can be set to the side. What is interesting is the following question: what will happen if the actions of Pashinyan and his main rival Kocharyan do not lead to a civil war and, suppose, the current government is reproduced? Let’s look at the messages of the acting Prime Minister from this perspective.

Pashinyan promises a) a vendetta, a professional slaughter not only of the state apparatus, but also of local authorities who do not obey him, and b) the same vendetta against “fighting” business owners. Let’s think about what this means, and whether or not a government with this mentality can truly work.

Is it possible to abolish the current state apparatus (where there may also be sabotage) and replace it with people who are “loyal to the revolution” but ignorant, as is sometimes the case? I think not. Will politically neutral or even loyal government officials be willing to work after such statements? I doubt sp again. Revenge should not be taken against the state apparatus, the military, the professors, the clergy, and the local government leaders for sympathizing with political opponents. Instead, it is important to show patience and try to “make them work” for the benefit of the state.

Let’s go back to the business owners. How compatible is Armenia with claiming to be a business paradise and threatening owners? Will the business owners feel safe in the event of a reproduction of power? It seems to me that no, except for the two who are on the government’s pre-election list. The rest of the business owners, including small and medium-sized ones, will be reluctant to invest because they will not be sure whether or not they will fall victim to the Prime Minister’s whims.

And finally, if the “not loyal” leaders of local governments are illegally replaced by people who are loyal to Pashinyan but have no authority among the people, will it truly be possible to govern the communities?
