“My personal expectations from this are not very relevant. I am confident that at some stage, concrete negotiations will be held for long-term peace, confirming it through the signing of an agreement,” said the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands to Armenia, Nicholas Schermers, during an interview with the Media Center in response to a reporter’s question of his expectations in terms of calling for sanctions against the Azerbaijani and Turkish authorities for war crimes committed in Artsakh.
The ambassador stressed that they understand well that there are still many problems to be solved before reaching that stage, and expressed hope that some solutions will be reached.
Upon the observation that the Dutch government passed a resolution demanding the immediate release of Armenian prisoners of war, meanwhile Azerbaijan is prosecuting Armenian prisoners of war, Nicholas Schermers responded, “Of course, the country’s parliament is only one body that has the ability to make decisions, but it is not immediately put into action. Of course, Azerbaijan has been clearly called upon by the Dutch government to return the Armenian POWs, but I would like to note that the Netherlands, as a separate country, is small in size and potential. In this regard, we try to focus all our efforts on the work carried out through the structure of the European Union so that Armenia receives assistance from as many countries as possible.”
