“Listen to the speeches of our deputies and ministers, you will mostly be ashamed”: Vigen Khachatryan on the occasion of independence

September 25,2021 20:00

“The concept of feedback operates both at the technical level and in socio-political relations. During the period of independence, the notion of feedback in the Republic of Armenia was not deeply realized,” said Vigen Khachatryan, MP of the Civil Contract faction of the National Assembly, during the first conference titled Independence, Democracy, and Security. Again finding parallels between the laws of the technical sphere and social-political life, he said, “A system of complex elements is stable as long as each element is independent. The failure of each element should not weaken the system. The greater the degree of freedom of each element, the more stable the system. There is this phenomenon in socio-political relations, but we have not realized it in depth during these thirty years. We did not realize that independence is sovereignty. Every state is sovereign as much as every citizen is sovereign. We did not do this enough.”  According to him, individuals, human freedoms, and human rights have not been prioritized. On this occasion, he added, “If it were prioritized, our independence would never be in jeopardy. Feedback, participation. That is what democracy is all about.” On this occasion, the deputy spoke about the Armenian government program, stating,

“The government has approved a five-year plan. I found out later that there was not a single word about the Armenian language in that program. That’s a big mistake. If we want to talk about human dignity and independence, we must understand what legislative initiative has been needed with our language for 30 years, as well as what the executive branch has to do and what the parliament has to do. Listen to the speeches of our deputies, ministers, and leaders. You will mostly be ashamed. They do not speak their mother tongue. For example, Henrik Hovhannisyan. When he speaks Armenian, you feel good. Language is not a show, it is a way of thinking. If we look at Armenian people right in the center, neither our independence nor our democracy will be endangered.”
