Without “former-present” talk

January 18,2023 10:30

Specific changes are expected in the political field. As they say, “according to the news hanging in the air,” it is possible. The second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, announces that he is leaving politics. If this is true, such a statement will be a positive step on his part. Positive, first of all, towards the deputies representing the “Armenia” alliance. The less their activities are connected with the former president, who has, to put it mildly, an ambiguous perception, the better for those deputies, who will probably have the opportunity to get rid of the “Kocharyan” label over time. First of all, ARF will win. One can treat that party differently, but what “Dashnaktsutyun” means is apparent to any literate person (it should be precise). What the “Armenia” alliance is unclear to many.

The same can be said about the Republican Party and Serzh Sargsyan. The RPA brand has, of course, deteriorated in the years 2000-2018. Moreover, it has declined more than the ARF brand. But, if Serzh Sargsyan also makes a statement about leaving politics, then Armen Ashotyan, Hayk Mamijanyan, Tigran Abrahamyan, and other figures with a particular political potential will act more freely and unfettered. They will have the opportunity to restore Ashot Navasardyan’s RPA, conditionally speaking.

It is no coincidence that the “With honor” parliamentary bloc is still perceived as RPA. The other parties of the block “Hayrenik”, as well as “Reborn Armenia” from the “Armenia” alliance are practically invisible. Creating a new party brand is not easy if you don’t succeed quickly. Dashnaktsutyun and RPA also did not register success in the street struggle in 2021-22, these parties are recognizable for better or for worse, and they should continue their way without the former presidents.

Now our people are in a tragic situation. Moreover, I don’t know what is sadder: that 120,000 Armenians are fighting for existence in the blockade or that the majority of millions of Armenians living outside Artsakh do not pay attention to it. Although I wrote on one occasion that I don’t rely on the political system, I won’t reveal a big secret if I say nothing lasts forever. And sooner or later, a real political struggle will begin. It would be good if, after the departure of the former presidents, at least the ridiculous talk of “former-present” would be removed from the scene.
