“The regimes that protect Aliyev’s government will not have the opportunity to do so from now on.” Member of the European Parliament about the UN decision

February 25,2023 14:02

“This decision of the Hague Court is indisputably excellent news,” French member of the European Parliament, who arrived in Armenia on a fact-finding mission, Co-Chairman of the friendship group with Artsakh in the Council of Europe Francois Alphonse, said at the press conference held in Yerevan, referring to the decision of the UN court.

According to him, dictatorships all have the exact nature. They need to adapt to international decisions and fulfill their requirements. According to the European Parliament member, the UN decision’s impact may take time.

On this occasion, he continued: “The first effect we will see is that all the regimes that protect Mr. Aliyev’s government will not have the opportunity to do so from now on. We know where the rights and wrongs are, and these people cannot play on two strings. We can say that the decision of the UN Court creates an additional opportunity for the supporters to prevent the opponents from defending Azerbaijan.” According to Gaspar Karapetyan, President of the European office of ARF Armenian Dat, it is certainly not possible to directly say that this decision will have any effect tomorrow, but it was a significant decision. And added: “Unfortunately, there was no point related to the gas supply, and the Court did not pay enough attention to the arguments about it, but, at least, it completely denied Azerbaijan’s claim.

Today, in the most responsible way, the UN court confirms that Azerbaijan, as a state, must remove the blockade. So Mr. Aliyev’s stories have no faith.” In response to the question: that The Hague Court believes that there is not enough evidence for the application of urgent measures related to gas supply, does this mean that it is still a secret for Europe that Azerbaijan can cut off the gas and oppress the Armenians of Artsakh by various means?

Francois Alphonse said: “It is impossible to go to the territories located in the region of Azerbaijan to be able to record all the testimonies. But it is a fact that people are deprived of gas, electricity, and communication. We all understand that they are being done to encourage the people of Karabakh to leave those territories. Of course, all that should be documented so that there is a pressure that the supplies are not stopped. International companies’ mediations are limited. The EU can apply some of the tools used in Ukraine or Iran to Azerbaijan to stop similar behavior that violates international law and cuts off the gas and other supplies.

Referring to the EU observation mission,  the European Parliament member said: “They are not troops stationed on the border; they do not have the same status as the Russian peacekeepers in Artsakh. We hope that they will be more active in the future than today. Currently, Europe is working as an observer whose neutrality has been recognized by the international community. It will work in the Armenian territory and monitor the aggressions committed by Azerbaijan or if some hidden aggressions are noticed so that they can be immediately documented and sent to the European structures. We would like to have peacekeepers, to have some international structure that would be able to carry out a peacekeeping mission.”
