Not to stop negotiating but to clarify the agenda

June 29,2023 10:30

During the Mirzoyan-Bayramov-Blinken negotiations in the USA, attacking the positions of the Artsakh Defense Army and killing four service members was, of course, another brazen display of action by Azerbaijan. The goal is simple: to show the world, in this case, first of all, the USA, that they will do whatever they want “on their territory.”

Armenia’s “peace-loving” position, according to which Artsakh is true “Azerbaijani territory,” also provides a basis for this insolence.

The reaction of the Artsakh authorities to another attack by Azerbaijan was purely emotional, calling to abandon negotiations. Armenian “pro-Westerners” reacted to this by labeling the people of Artsakh as “Russian spies” once again. There is no shortage of labels among our politicized masses, and it is natural to explain this or that event; you attribute it to the conspiracies of a power or country you don’t like, after which life seems to become easier. It’s a well-known psychological pattern that when you know where the “den of evil” is, it creates an illusion of safety.

However, the call not to negotiate was, of course, wrong. Of course, it would be equally bad to pretend during the negotiations that nothing happened, that the Azerbaijani army is not attacking the people of Artsakh, or not to notice that it has been ten days that not a single truck of Russian peacekeepers has delivered any humanitarian cargo to Artsakh. I don’t know how exactly these negotiations went, but it is evident that the Armenian side is constantly worsening our negotiating positions with its senseless “peacefulness.”

The vague resolution “Security and rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh” does not say anything. Azerbaijan does not intend to ensure these “security and rights”; on the contrary, it plans to commit genocide in Artsakh.

It should be said during every negotiation and on every international platform. The solutions to the issue, that is, the methods to fill that empty formula with content, should be offered to every one: Russia, the USA, the European Union, and Iran. But before proposing, Armenian diplomacy should correctly formulate and voice those solutions.
