On May 5, the first Armenia–European Union Summit was held in Yerevan, marking a turning point in the development of bilateral relations. During the summit, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Armenia’s reform agenda, emphasizing its readiness to further deepen the partnership.
In this context, the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, Arpine Sargsyan, and the Executive Director of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), Hans Leijtens, initialled a Working Arrangement on operational cooperation.
The document is intended to establish a legal and practical framework for the exchange of operational information, to develop risk analysis, situational assessment and early warning mechanisms, to promote professional training and capacity building, and to support the prevention and detection of irregular migration, organized crime, and border-related offences.
The Working Arrangement is consistent with Armenia’s international obligations and will contribute to the implementation of the benchmarks set under the EU Visa Liberalisation Action Plan (VLAP).
Through the document, Armenia has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a strong, practical, and trust-based cooperation with Frontex and to deepening this strategic partnership in the years ahead.
The signing of the Working Arrangement with Frontex will enable the Republic of Armenia to respond more effectively to migration and border challenges, as well as to strengthen national capacities in line with EU best practices and standards.
