Today www.aravot.am inquired of Tigran Mukuchyan, the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC), how in such a society, where people are murdered just for entering a
restaurant wearing a training suit, people who had withdrawn their candidacies could report to the police that they had been forced to withdraw their candidacies. If one is under pressure, one withdraws his candidacy, can he have guts to report to the law-enforcement bodies knowing, by the way, that nothing will change by that?
Let us remind that Tigran Mukuchyan explained to journalists regarding the mayor of Kapan that he should have reported to the law-enforcement bodies. In response to our question, the CEC chairman said, “I by no means agree, because if the mayor of Kapan hadn’t had the guts to report, likewise, he wouldn’t have had the guts to make a statement either. He proclaims that from the housetops, what prevented him from reporting, in order that his own rights were protected in accordance with the law? The candidate made a statement that he had been pressured. Although the candidate is a party member, but he announced his candidacy himself and besides the party, the candidate himself made a statement. And even if we compare those two statements, assessments differ even in those two statements. Besides, let us not forget that the man was the incumbent mayor. If a person, being the incumbent mayor, makes such a statement, if the party, a member of which he is, makes such a statement, I don’t think it is right to say that the person was afraid and that is why he didn’t report to the law-enforcement bodies.” In response to our observation that people didn’t trust the law-enforcement bodies, because the latter were a part of the same ruling regime, Mr. Mukuchyan said, “If he didn’t report, there is no position on that, there is no conclusion, why do we show such an attitude beforehand?”
