“Two months ago, I was considering splitting of Ukraine less likely, and today it is likely to happen”

February 20,2014 16:31

In the conversation with Aravot.am, Ara Papyan, political analyst, head of “Modus Vivendi” Center, analyzed the events taken place in Ukraine. It is known that the Kiev collisions resulted in 25 people killed and 400 wounded, dozens of burned cars, damaged buildings, and today a day of mourning is declared in Ukraine. With what political and economic orientation will appear Ulraine out of the created situation, or whether the above said will become a sobriety impetus, Ara Papyan considers that the situation in Ukraine is greatly changing hour by hour, making it difficult to predict, however, according to him, one thing is clear: “Ukraine will no longer return to the situation, in which it was two months ago. In other words, the blood shed there, as our people say, blood is thicker than water, it will not be forgotten, and will not be forgiven. Ukraine is facing big changes, whether good or bad, that’s another matter. If two months ago I was considering Ukraine’s split less likely, today, I see it quite likely, because obviously the country and the population have two mutually exclusive extreme orientation, in other words, the western and north western part is more pro-European, is more clearly expressing in favor of European orientation, and the north and south-east are more Russian speakers.

If we sum up, the country will act in double unity for so long until the part of the nation, which strives to Europe, does not feel satisfaction.” As for the observation, we can say that more difficult days ahead are expecting to Ukraine, as long as the government has not changed the nature of their actions, Ara Papyan noted, “If by saying difficult days you mean that there might be more bloodshed and clashes are, then, yes, there is such a danger, this country is just in double unity. Ukrainian people have the experience and tradition of partisan fighting, and if people understood that it is fighting against the occupant, it may also resort to arms. Their mentality is different, they are not Armenians, we, the Armenians, are measuring ten times and cutting once, they are like us, they are not tolerant. The support from the West, even in the form of statements, is more important, and today the United States places the responsibility on Yanukovich, there are already rumors about judging him by the Hague court, and it could happen, if it is determined that crimes against humanity have occurred, a list will be formed, and then will demand Russia to extradite to them. And, Russia is always ready to extradite, and if the time comes, it will act in the same way with Yanukovych. For the West and Russia, Ukraine is a decisive battle field and the parties understand that the political trends of upcoming years will be due to it.” As said by Ara Papyan, Armenia is different, it is too miserable and small, the geopolitical situation is also different, and we have lost so much that we are psychologically not prepared for losing territories, and the Ukrainians say they are ready to lose, until they achieve their goal.
