‘Turkey’s military operations will be calculated, it has obstacles to overcome’: Armen Petrosyan

October 11,2019 22:39

“The military operations that Turkey launched against the Kurds in northern Syria is putting the security of the region to the test once again,” expert of Arab affairs Armen Petrosyan told Aravot Daily regarding the Turkish ‘Operation Peace Spring’ against Syria. “This is Turkey’s latest attack against a neighboring country that is in violation of international fundamentals. The international community and all countries involved in the Syrian War have condemned Turkey’s aggression, but on the other hand, it is evident that this operation will be more balanced since Turkey recognizes that there are boundaries that are not to be crossed. So, there will be some opportunities to control the situation. Future developments will also depend on Kurds’ responsive operations. Will they be able to withstand it or not? In any case, there are deterrent mechanisms in place,” Armen Petrosyan noted.

The expert believes that this conflict will be another opportunity for propaganda, which could cause the Turkish side to take advantage of the ‘Armenian battalion’ that is supporting the Kurds. “There is no information at the moment about this battalion, but the Kurdish propaganda machine spoke about Nubar Ozanian, who is part of the multi-national Syrian Democratic Forces. He is a well-known Armenian freedom fighter who has fought against Turks for many years. This fact could put the Armenian community in the region in danger since this can be seen as ‘support for terrorism.’ The Kurds were the ones to speak about this subject, but the Turks took advantage of it because it was of their best interest to do so. Turks also have plotted against Armenians.”
