‘A song needs to be written in Armenia that will compete with Jingle Bells and Happy Birthday in popularity’: Nikol Pashinyan

December 11,2019 19:37

The Armenian government has allocated approximately 270 million AMD for New Year’s celebrations. Nikol Pashinyan explained in a live video what the purpose of this large amount of money will be.

“It is important to mention why this is happening because this is not simply about eating, drinking, and partying lavishly. In our opinion, we are resolving a social-psychological, economic, and aesthetic issue. What economic issue am I referring to? Many Armenians celebrate New Year’s outside of Armenia, which is an economic issue for our country because money flows out of Armenia. We want the New Year to be celebrated by as many Armenian citizens as possible, which is why we have organized such complex events,” Nikol Pashinyan said. He said that the government also intends to promote a flow of tourists by organizing such events.

According to Nikol Pashinyan, from December 21st to January 5th, there will be concerts every day at the park in honor of Yerevan’s 2,750th anniversary and Republic Square. “We want to do this so that children will pay attention to the stage instead of their neighbor’s dinner tables in order to develop their visual artistry. Many people are wondering if it is truly worth spending so much money when there are so many people in Armenia who are living in poor conditions. The atmosphere that will be established on Republic Square will provide people who do not have the opportunity to spend a lot the chance to celebrate New Year’s in Yerevan. There will also be food trucks and fast food stations. People can bring their children. There will be vendors at the 2,750th anniversary park selling sandwiches, hot dogs, and hamburgers. People can have a glass of wine and a sandwich as they enjoy this artistic atmosphere, attend concerts, and go to museums. This will establish a new atmosphere for the New Year.”

The Prime Minister also said that he is jealous when he hears that international Christmas songs are more popular than Armenian sons. “I said that new Christmas and birthday songs need to be written. We need to continue this process until we have a Christmas song that is as popular as Jingle Bells or Happy Birthday. I found out that a new Christmas song has been written this year, which will be performed on Republic Square. I don’t know if this song will be popular or not, but a song needs to be written in Armenia that will compete with Jingle Bells and Happy Birthday in popularity.”
