Orwell’s scenario

August 07,2021 12:30

I am completely in favor of the National Assembly utilizing the toughest security measures so that everyone in that building- employees, deputies, and reporters- are required to go through security several times, and so that many security guards will be present. By the way, it is not necessary for these guards to be wearing military uniforms; that seems ostentatious. It’s important for everyone to follow security measures instead of there being privileged deputies who, for example, are not required to go through security. It cannot be ruled out that the NSS has received such warnings, and if so, then that structure must especially be more careful.

But if a reporter has fulfilled all the security requirements, if their recorder, phone, and camera are thoroughly checked, then why should they not be able to approach any deputy and ask any question? Or why are they forbidden to photograph people in military uniform in the National Assembly? What, are they doing their job secretly?

This has nothing to do with security and speaks of the degradation of the current government, and to be more precise, of returning to the old, “Serzh-Robert” base. I remember a revolutionary who took office in May 2018 told a reporter, “Keep calling me by name, nothing has changed.” Two months later, it was not possible to address that official not only by name, but also to talk to him in general. He “isolated” himself by building a wall with the help of assistants and secretaries. This is how the disconnection from life and reality begins. It is unlikely that we will meet the Prime Minister riding a bicycle or the mayor who went to the gym in the morning. It is clear that from the beginning, people do not imagine power and all its “spices” as it really is, but given the slogans under which the “current regime” came to power, some things seem strange.

Now the former revolutionaries, who allegedly fought for transparency and accountability, are becoming more “opaque” and “unaccountable” than those against whom they have fought. Now, they are demigods who should walk through the corridors of the National Assembly proudly and without being disturbed, communicate only with people of their “rank,” and journalists “should not be seen,” although some of them were former journalists. Now they are defending themselves from insults and slander with high fines, as well as criminalizing swearing. I am sure there will be such new initiatives soon.

Do you remember how Orwell’s famous novel ends? The pigs, who, together with the other animals, started a revolution “for the sake of equality,” took out a whip and began to rule just as humans did.
