Sincerity is preferable

September 02,2014 12:52

“We will fight together against the so-called “Armenian Genocide”,” said the newly appointed Foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, in the interview to Azerbaijan APA agency. If the Azerbaijani media does not distort the words of the official (and such things “happen” in the neighboring country), than the beginning of Çavuşoğlu’s term is quite “promising”. Of course, he is not going to fight with his Azerbaijani counterparts “against genocide,” even “the so-called”, but against the matter that any country in the world, any part of the country or a city would give an adequate assessment to the crime of his ancestors. In this joint struggle, it must be assumed that Turkey is going to play the role of a soloist, whereas Azerbaijan would so to speak “play up to it.”

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu is well known to our society. He was leading the Turkish delegation in PACE since 2003, and was the PACE chair in 2010-12. In these two positions, he was displaying as a fervent supporter of all initiatives of Azerbaijan, he was also involved in anti-Armenian propaganda of Azerbaijani delegation. Within the framework of the same propaganda, he was trying to create a “Karabakh Committee” in PACE, which, naturally, did not give any positive result, but would enable Azerbaijan to repeat its myths about “20 percent” and “1 million”.

Appointing such a person a minister, of course, is noteworthy. It is clear that Davutoğlu’s views who was the former holder of this position, do not differ from those of Çavuşoğlu. The matter is only about the degree of accent and rhetoric aggression. In the context of this statement by Turkish Foreign Minister, it is not clear how Erdoğan is going to attend the events commemorating the “so-called genocide” on April 24 in Yerevan, when his country is going to fight with Azerbaijan against it.

On the other hand, in my opinion, Çavuşoğlu’s sincerity is more acceptable than some “the sweet speeches” by some Turkish officials. Just like the well-known anecdote. In Istanbul airport, an Armenian man is approaching a Turkish man and asking what he thinks of the Armenian Genocide. “It was a terrible tragedy, the Turkish man replies, “I am ashamed of my ancestors for committing something like that with your wonderful nation.” The Armenian man approaches another Turkish man with the same question, “Well, we did it right, you deserve it, yet we have done little, no Armenian was to be left in the world,” replied the interlocutor. “You apparently are an honest man,” says the Armenian man to him, “please, look after my luggage for ten minutes and I will go after my business.”
