‘Azerbaijanis are scared to come and go alone, Russian subdivisions escort them during shift changes’: What Zaruhi Postanjyan saw and heard in Syunik

July 19,2021 17:44

The head of the Yerkir Tsirani political party, Zaruhi Postanjyan, recently returned from Syunik. During a press conference organized at the Hayeli club, she said that she traveled throughout the province for three days, and visited the Agarak, Meghri, Kapan, and Goris communities. “The public mood was not panic, but there was concern about the recent events – the shooting in Yeraskh, the arrest of the mayors, the closure of the ZCMC factory. Employees are deprived of the right to work, and there are fears that the Agarak plant may suffer the same fate and close. They understand that a special policy is being pursued.”

Postanjyan assured that she did not meet anyone in Syunik who was in favor of the current authorities and voted for Civil Contract. “It was also a mystery for them. They understand that where the military voted, there was falsification, but it was also a surprise to them how those numbers were registered.  They understood that these numbers were not real, they were the result of falsification. What was written in those papers, like the disgraceful letter of November 9, is not legal for the people of Syunik.”

Zaruhi Postanjyan said that there is clear resistance in Syunik, and its leaders are the mayors. Therefore, the authorities wish to isolate them to implement their policies. “But that doesn’t mean that Syunik won’t have new leaders.”

Regarding border issues, Postanjyan said that she saw around 10 positions with the Azerbaijani flag. They were tent positions. “When I spoke to our border guards, they said that the Azerbaijanis are afraid, and the only place they can go is on the road to Kapan. They come and go on that road, and the Russian subdivisions do not escort them. But in the other positions where there are no routes, they are afraid and Russian subdivisions escort them during shift changes. They are scared to come and go alone. They are afraid of our soldiers conducting special operations against them. If they allow us, we can easily push back the subdivisions that are there. But our border guards were given the order not to initiate anything and to only check the flow of citizens. They check people’s passports when coming and going to see if there are foreign citizens or reporters.” Postanjyan believes that these authorities are taking steps to dissolve Armenian statehood.
