How to form a strong opposition

February 26,2015 15:59

To “build” a true alternative matures

In my previous article, I stopped on the point that healthy and young forces of all political parties and public organizations should initiate forming a true alternative and a serious effective opposition from now on, which will be able to compete with the government at the 2022 parliamentary elections. As a “preface,” the representatives of this new upcoming formed political forces should make two steps: 1) stop criticizing leaders of the parliamentary Trio (or former Trio). If you are better, smarter, better-trained politicians that Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Gagik Tsarukyan and Raffi Hovannisian, prove it with work rather than humiliating others, 2) stop playing on lumpen mass, which, apparently, will not rebel in Armenia, and it yes, it will robs at least some stores.

“You are robbed, you are oppressed, we are kind people, we will feed you well,” these types of talks that are aimed at winning the lumpen hearts, so to speak, “pleasing him,” were limiting the creative thought of the opposition over 24 years. The main “object” of the opposition propaganda should be not the poor masses who want to live well by some miracle and revenge on the government authorities for their failures, but the people who are able to work and create, who under no circumstances will leave Armenia.

Given these “preconditions”, the newly established political force should pass to “building” a true alternative. It is a difficult, laborious work that requires participation of different sectors, which almost no political force up to now was reluctant to implement. I say almost, because for the sake of fairness, it must be said that in 2009-2010, the ANC has done similar attempts, but then it deviated towards the direction of beaten path “Poghos go away, Petros come close.”

I visualize the work of “building” an alternative as follows. The party says, “I have such a person in this sphere, who has a certain alternative ideas, he also forms a team of his supporters. If we win the elections, then this person will be the leader of this sphere. Respected specialist of the sphere and interested people, what do you think, and how do you want this sphere to develop?” This, I repeat, is a daily work that requires a certain material resources, local structures, regular consultation-meetings, and sometimes rallies.

It seems to me that this alleged political force should think about foreign political priorities. The experience shows that being an alternative, let’s say, in democracy, economy, and the fight against corruption and monopolies and at the same time run to Moscow and ask the consent from undemocratic and corrupt government is not effective. It’s not only a tactical mistake. Why should the Kremlin prefer the current regime to you? It is also an ideological impasse. I think Armenia can develop politically and economically only if it is an independent and sovereign state.

I am confident that in the coming years, this new type of political force will be established. Its public demand matures.
